Slightly more than half of its  700 students are usually natives. The tuition waiver is also meant to encourage more Alaska Native students to complete a bachelor’s program –  placing more degreed Alaska Natives in the employment pool. The college offers associate degrees, vocational certificates, and short-term workforce development courses, plus a bachelor’s degree in business administration that just launched this fall. A full course load runs over $3,000 at Ilisagvik College, a stretch for online students who live in rural areas where there aren’t a lot of high-paying jobs. Ilisagvik College president Pearl Brower says the move is expected to boost the college’s native student enrollment to put it more in line with national norms.last_img
