first_imgIndia’s star boxer Vijender Singh has promised his fans a world title in 2019 after signing a 15-month deal with world’s top promoter Bob Arum.”I don’t think my world title is too far away. There is nothing bigger than Arum’s Top Ranks in the world of professional boxing. He is the best from the times of Muhammad Ali to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. So I am fortunate to get into that league. Every boxer dreams of fighting in the United Staes, the Mecca of boxing. Mine will come true very soon. I want to prove that we are the best in the world,” Singh told Aaj Tak in an interview. The 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist expects to make his US debut in next three months.”I am so much excited and finding it difficult to wait till the end of February or March when the fight is expected to take place. I want to do as well as I have done at home in India or in the United Kingdom. There is a big fight lined up between Canelo Alvarez and Rocky Fielding and I might take on the winner or probably Canelo for sure if it pans out as per the plan,” said the boxer from Bhiwani.A WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental super middle weight champion, Singh has a 10-0 record after turning professional in 2015, including seven knockouts.”It is only 10-0 right now but people have achieved a lot more. Look at Mayweather, he has reached the half-century. Hopefully, I too will reach that mark. The record could have improved further as everything was ready for the Commonwealth title fight in May but my opponent got injured and the entire thing got postponed. There were talks of having fights in Canada and Australia too but it didn’t materialise. All this while, we were preparing for bigger things and now you can see the result. Good things take time,” Vijender said.advertisementSingh met Arum in Los Angeles last month to sign the contract and convinced the 86-year-old to bring fights to India.”We were in touch with Bob Arum’s team for the last two years. But finishing my earlier contract took some time. He was very excited to meet a boxer from India. He promised of giving me the best fight in the US and also, if we wish so, plan a big fight in India. I told him that if he wants glitz and glamour, then Mumbai will be an ideal venue and Delhi if he wants a full house, roaring crowd of boxing fans.”It is mutually beneficial. It is a big thing to happen for Indian boxing as our boxers can showcase talent in both amateur and professional boxing. So many boxers are in touch with me and want to become a pro boxer. As it is said that beginning is always tough so I am happy that I have started something which would eventually benefit the sport in our country.”All this while, Viju, as he is fondly called by his fans, has been keeping a close eye on India’s preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”Mary Kom is our biggest hope,” he declares. “Look at the way she performed in the World Boxing Championship. If she maintains that form then definitely a medal is sure. She is our biggest bet,” Vijender concluded. Also Watch:last_img
