FOUR million people now call the city of Los Angeles home. This year, an influx of people, mostly immigrants from all over the world, put down stakes in the City of Angels. From the numbers alone, one might be tempted to conclude it is due to Los Angeles’ stellar quality of life. Four million people can’t be wrong, right? But the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Indeed, a closer look shows that while more immigrants are drawn to the opportunities of the tolerant diversity, the middle class is leaving for more affordable, safer communities, like those in the Inland Empire. So as L.A. grows, so grows its reputation of a city of rich and poor, with little in between.
