Lawmakers Given 14-Day Ultimatum to Return ‘Old’ Official License Plates

first_imgOne of the authorized and real official license car plates of members of House of RepresentativesThe Daily Observer has reliably gathered that the leadership of the House of Representatives, through Speaker Bhofal Chambers, has given a 14-day ultimatum to current members and former members of  the House of Representatives of the 54th and 53rd Legislature respectively, who were issued the “Old Official License Plates,” to return them to the Chief Clerk’s office.The Speaker has also demanded staffs and support staffs of the House of Representatives, who were assigned the “Old License Plates,” to do same.According to an anonymous tip, a circular dated July 10, 2018, signed by Chief Clerk Mildred Sayon under the directive of Speaker Chambers, titled: “Retrieval of the Old Official License Plates of the Honorable House of Representatives.Another authorized and real official license plates of members of the House of Representatives“By directive of Hon. Bhofal Chambers, Speaker of the 54th Legislature, former members of the House of Representatives of the 53rd and current members of the House of Representatives of the 54th Legislature, are to turn over the assigned old official license plates to the Office of the Chief Clerk,” the circular said, according to the anonymous tip.It added: “This mandate should claim the attention of all concerned as the Speaker expects your response to this call in two weeks, as of the date stated above (July 10, 2018).”The old license plates, either dominantly black or white do not have “LEGISLATURE or LB,” unlike the new License Plates which have “LEGISLATURE or LB.”There are reports that the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), the Ministry of Transport (MoT), the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) met the leadership of the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate to help in the collection and retrieval of the Old Official License Car Plates.However, besides the fight to curb corruption and generate revenue, there are also reports that, “Certain vehicles with the old license plates have been spotted in indecent places or are being used in crime-related activities.“In view of this development, the Honorable Speaker, through the leadership of the House of Representatives, has given instructions for the immediate recall of all the old license plates issued in the 53rd Legislature,” the anonymous source said.It has also been reported that the Liberian Senate has further instructed the Ministry of Transport and the Liberia National Police (LNP) to arrest anyone who is possession of the Senate’s old license plates.Meanwhile, an employee of the General Service Agency (GSA) in the Motor Pool Department said over 300 “Old License Plates” were distributed to members of the House of Representatives and Senate, as well as staffs of the 53rd Legislature and are to expire on Monday, January 15, 2018.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
