Clearwater is 0-3 and the Crusaders beat the same team 47-7 in 2014. Wellington is still relatively injury free, and has rushed for more than 400 yards in the past two games. But ask Tyler Ryan, Wellington High School head coach, and he has a different perspective.“They have a solid football team, who has not put it all together quite yet,” Ryan said. “They run a spread style offense and that scares me.”In Wellington’s lone loss this season against Augusta, the Orioles were effective in the fourth quarter once they were able to work the outside corners. Clearwater will do a lot of the same.“They will use a lot of counters and misdirection,” Ryan said. “It will be very important for the guys in the backfield to make the right reads and get to the edge.”Not that Wellington hasn’t done any misdirection itself. The Wing T offense, with its methodology of using three backs to deceive the ball, has worked well so far. After rushing for 408 yards against Goddard Eisenhower, the Crusaders had 432 against Circle.“We’re not even close to how I would like the offense to run,” Ryan said. “But I do believe we are getting better. That has been our motto each and every week – to get better.”While this game in the overall scheme of the season will not mean much, the Crusaders would like to get a W before embarking on the meat of its schedule. It also kicks off a four-week stint in which three of the next four games are on the road. The Crusaders currently have a four game losing streak on the road dating back to Circle of last year. A win is important because thereafter they are making the trip to Andale. After a home game with Wichita Collegiate, Wellington will be back on the road to play Rose Hill to open district play.“It is important for us to have momentum going into the next set of games,” Ryan said.Wellington-Clearwater game at a glance:League opener: Wellington (2-1) at Clearwater (0-3), Friday at 7 p.m.How to get there: The Clearwater football field is on the east side of the community. Indians last beat the Crusaders in 2011.Clearwater (22-4)1983 – Wellington 15 Clearwater 421984 – Wellington 7 Clearwater 61985 – Wellington 44 Clearwater 01986 – Wellington 28 Clearwater 61987 – Wellington 24 Clearwater 111988 – Wellington 34 Clearwater 161989 – Wellington 49 Clearwater 01990 – Wellington 47 Clearwater 181994 – Wellington 48 Clearwater 241995 – Wellington 44 Clearwater 0 (9-1)1996 – Wellington 40 Clearwater 81997 – Wellington 6 Clearwater 121998 – Wellington 30 Clearwater 01999 – Wellington 34 Clearwater 02000 – Wellington 42 Clearwater 02001 – Wellington 55 Clearwater 62002 – Wellington 40 Clearwater 72003 – Wellington 48 Clearwater 192006 – Wellington 22 Clearwater 02007 – Wellington 33 Clearwater 232008 – Wellington 28 Clearwater 32009 – Wellington 20 Clearwater 142010 – Wellington 21 Clearwater 242011 – Wellington 14 Clearwater 342012 – Wellington 34 Clearwater 212013 – Wellington 21 Clearwater 192014 – Wellington 47 Clearwater 7Game’s significance: A win here puts the Crusaders at 2-0 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV and in the hunt for a league championship. Currently, Wellington, Collegiate and Mulvane are 1-0. Andale, Clearwater and Circle are 0-1.Injury situation: Knock on wood, so far so good. Ryan reports normal bumps and bruises for this time of year.Intangible fact: There was some dispute earlier this week whether Wellington running back Remington Gilkey tied the WHS record for most rushing touchdowns in a game when he scored five against Circle. The question is whether Chris Chapin, who scored six touchdowns in one game against Derby in 1968, still owned that record. After revisiting the record books, Chapin had five rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in that game so that would put Gilkey in the record books tied for first place for rushing touchdowns and second behind Chapin for most touchdowns in a game rushing, receiving and passing. The new record totals are as follows:Most touchdowns rushing (game)1. Chris Chapin, 5, Derby, 1968.1. Mike Herrington, 5, Augusta, 1979.1. Mark Sneed, 5, Norton, 1981.1. Zane Aguilar, 5, Mulvane, 2003.1. Taylan Ybarra, 5, Mulvane, 2010.1. Remington Gilkey, 5, Circle, 2015. Most touchdowns rushing, passing, receiving)1. Chris Chapin, 6, Derby, 1968.2. Mike Herrington, 5, Augusta, 1979.2. Mark Sneed, 5, Norton, 1981.2. Zane Aguilar, 5, Mulvane, 2003.2. Taylan Ybarra, 5, Mulvane, 2010.2.
