Jamaicans warned against e-cigarettes

first_imgIn Jamaica, the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of the National Chest Hospital, Dr. Terry Baker, is urging citizens to stay away from using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). He warns they are dangerous and should not be viewed as a viable option to regular cigarettes.Dr. Baker says although e-cigarettes have been put forward as a safer alternative to cigarettes, dangers still abound. “A number of persons have turned to e-cigarettes or vaping in the belief that it is not harmful, including persons who are using it as a transitional tool to quit smoking,” she said.  While acknowledging some of her colleagues have not drawn the same conclusions, she is among those that are of the firm view that the product is harmful. Not as innocuous as some believe“We believe that they are not as innocuous as some people may think,” she said, noting that there are certain substances used in the manufacture of e-cigarettes, and the vapor that is produced is not standardized. While e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they have other substances that have been shown to be toxic, such as nicotine, which is highly addictive.“You then run the risk of having a myriad of substances that are going to be inhaled into the lungs. Persons will say they are not inhaling, but you can’t accurately determine what is going to be entering the body or the lungs,” she added.Contain dangerous formaldehydeAccording to the senior health official, some of the other flavorings included to make e-cigarettes attractive have been known to cause lung disease. She pointed out that some e-cigarettes even contain the dangerous formaldehyde, which is used as a preservative or embalming fluid.“While it might not be in the concentration that embalmers use, by no means does formaldehyde belong in your lungs. It is carcinogenic,” she warned. Dr. Baker noted that some places in the United States have regulated the use of e-cigarettes in a similar manner to regular cigarettes.“They have prevented sale to minors and are looking at putting graphic health warnings on the packages, just like cigarettes. So, while research continues into vaping and e-cigarettes, they are by no means harmless,” she said.Other than lung cancer, cigarette smoking is associated with a number of other cancers, including cancers of the tongue, breast, cervix, stomach and colon as well as heart disease. National Chest Hospital is the only specialist hospital in the island that specifically treats patients with chest-related illnesses. Jamaican medical officer cautions that e-cigarettes are a dangerous alternative to traditional cigarettes.last_img read more

FPL set to begin line clearing in Lauderdale Lakes

first_imgIn the next few weeks, FPL will be performing line cleaning in the City of Lauderhill neighborhoods.  The trees will be trimmed in a manner that redirects new growth away from power lines. When trees grow into or near power lines, they can cause power interruptions to residents in neighborhoods. FPL’s strategy to maintain power lines free of tree growth is based on a consistent, planned trimming cycle. Trimming the entire length of a power line on a regular basis – instead of trimming individual locations – ensures the integrity of the power line. If a tree condition needs attention outside of regular maintenance, FPL will let you know by leaving an inspection notice card with a scheduled work date.  Access to residential property required Please know that if access to your property is required, a contractor will contact you personally or leave a note at your door in advance of any work.Free mulchWhen FPL line-clearing contractors are trimming trees in your area, you may be eligible for free mulch.  Once FPL’s line-clearing professionals have completed work in your area, they will use a wood chipper to grind the tree limbs and branches into mulch. This type of mulch is different from store-bought mulch, which is treated and made from one kind of tree. The quality and consistency of this mulch varies considerably, depending on the types of trees and leaves removed during the tree work. FPL does not recommend this mulch for aesthetic use in formal landscape beds, but rather for use around trees and other plants to: Maintain moisture Maintain soil temperature Reduce weeds and grasses Provide nutrients to the soil, and Reduce wind erosion from uncovered soils. For more information on the city or this project, please call Public Works at  954-535-2815 or FPL Vegetation Management at (888)274-9098 and refer to Work Order 8029322.last_img read more

Threats to Miami-Dade Public Schools will result in arrests

first_imgMiami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has received a total of 47 threats so far this school year, which have resulted in nine arrests; the latest arrest occurring on Tuesday, December 18. In a statement M-DCPS said the these hoax threats disrupt the schools’ educational environment and interfere with police officers’ ability to protect schools from real dangers; drain law enforcement resources; cost taxpayers’ money; and increase stress levels, anxiety and absenteeism.Barraged by social media threats“In recent weeks, the school district has been barraged by social media threats most of which have been non-credible,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “Hoax and prank threats of any kind targeting schools makes balancing school safety and classroom instruction difficult. As a community, we have an obligation to encourage everyone, especially children, to use social media responsibly. The consequences of doing otherwise can be detrimental to a child’s future.”Each threat will be investigatedMiami-Dade Schools Police Department (MDSPD) said it takes every threat seriously and is working closely with other law enforcement agencies to investigate each one in order to determine the validity of the threat and identify the perpetrator. On average it takes 24 hours, spread over a three-day work period, to investigate these threat cases from start to finish. Simpler cases can be resolved over an 8-hour period with one detective, while others can take more than 40 hours and require several detectives and the involvement of external police and criminal justice agencies. Some cases require close collaboration with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and with M-DPD’s Homeland Security Bureau. Often times detectives and command staff personnel are required to work after hours, some on overtime.last_img read more

Haute Japan! Groupe Barrière eyes IR opportunities

first_imgShare StumbleUpon Related Articles Share Jonathan Strock – BarrièreFrench luxury hotel and hospitality giant Groupe Lucien Barrière has confirmed that it has developed a ‘Japanese strategic unit’ monitoring the nation’s ‘integrated resorts’ opportunities. The firm’s Japanese movements are confirmed by Barrière Group Casino Development Director Jonathan Strock speaking to the Nikkei Asian Review.Strock has been charged with leading the strategic unit, which seeks to bring European haute couture hospitality to the Asian gambling marketplace. This July, Japan’s Diet lower house confirmed that it will allow three casinos to be developed under the mandate of its pending ‘Integrated Resorts Bill’ – which has been forwarded to the Diet upper house for it final review. The disclosed provisions of the IR Bill, have underwhelmed global casino stakeholders who believed that Japan would commit to developing five casino resort properties.Furthermore, Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic government has bowed to opposition integrity concerns, imposing a number of operating restrictions on the casino resorts, including – set limits on casino visits, patron entry fees and a ban on VIP/junket promotions.Unfazed by the challenge, Strock believes that Japan’s strict operating code on casino premises will give Barrière the best base on which to launch its Asian market profile.“Casinos have been legal in France since 1907, and Barriere also operates facilities in Switzerland, which has some of the world’s strictest regulations concerning gambling addiction and visitor management,” Strock told the Nikkei Asian Review“We fully understand the debate in Japan over preventing addiction.”Operating since 1912, the French hospitality group has built a European portfolio of 34 hotel-casinos, primarily operating in French upmarket destinations such as Cannes, St Tropez, and Megeve. At present, international casino stakeholders await the final approval of Japan’s IR Bill. However further patience will be needed as Japan forms its Casino Control Commission, a department which will judge the IR tenders, enforce casino rules and monitor gambling activities.Barrière is the latest industry incumbent to state its Japanese IR intent, with the European outfit likely to compete against US giants MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. To date, the Japanese government’s complex development of its IR Bill has perplexed industry commentators. Competing for one-of-three lucrative casino licenses Groupe Barrière, hopes that this trend continues, with Japan selecting French sophistication over American mass entertainment. ESI Digital: Esports betting enters its ‘clutch moment’

first_imgShare Esports wagering has been thrown centre-stage in recent months due to the global health pandemic shutting down the majority of live sports markets. However, for this growing industry to continue to develop and prosper after COVID-19, it is imperative that operators and providers collaborate to enhance its products. The ESI Digital Summit, created by Esports Insider, has dedicated a large portion of its content to the esports betting in order to continue topics and discussion on how the sector can flourish. Phill Adams, the CEO of new online esports betting website Puntt.gg, emphasised that with the competitive gaming sector gaining significant traction, as pandemic circumstances have accelerated esports wagering agenda. He said: “The esports betting sector is at a crucial point at the moment.  It is gaining increased interest from traditional betting operators as esports has been one of the main products available over lockdown.  There are studies like this one that suggests that traditional betters are discovering esports for the first time at the moment with 30 per cent of customers betting on esports in April, only started in April.“The ESI Digital Summit is the perfect platform to debate how esports capitalises on this increased interest and works to ensure that it keeps its place at the top table in the perceptions of traditional operators.”Puntt.gg, developed by Liverpool-based RPGG Media, has been announced as a participant in ESI’s ‘The Clutch Digital’ feature in which four esports related companies, at various stages of fundraising, will pitch live to a panel of judges and investors in the esports space. Businesses ranging from sportsbooks such as Pinnacle and Betway to global esports organisations like Fnatic and Rogue have been announced as speakers for the summit, highlighting the importance for deeper collaboration and knowledge sharing in view of COVID-19’s impacts. Luckbox’s CEO Quentin Martin added: “The esports betting boom is well documented and as the sector matures, becoming closer to the traditional sports gambling industry, events such as ESI Digital Summit are becoming increasingly important. It provides a fantastic showcase so that the wider gambling industry can more easily see the potential of esports betting, as well as to meet the individuals and organisations at the forefront of the growth.“I’ve spoken at and attended many ESI events and they are always more than worthwhile. They’re a great opportunity to network, share knowledge and elevate the profile of your work.”As both Adams and Martin alluded to, open conversations, networking and debates seem to be key factors in developing future plans and projects centred around the esports betting sector. Last month SBC launched its inaugural digital conference with a particular emphasis on how the betting industry has been impacted on the global health pandemic in order to spark conversations and provide alternative views, which in the end will benefit the industry. The same applies for the ESI Digital Summit, providing an esports specific event in which firm’s can network and develop brands through a virtual platform.Martin added: “As an esports-dedicated company like ours, having regular conference events that are respected, well-organised and high-profile is invaluable. When it comes to making contact with new and existing partners, sharing ideas and getting your name out there, there is no better platform.”The two-day digital conference is set to commence today at 2pm, with The Clutch Digital concluding its first day of panels and showcases.
