IBB Ladies Hold Children Golf Clinic

first_imgThe Vice-captain of the section and the Chairperson of this year’s development programme, Mrs Mary-Rose Richard Obiora, disclosed that it will run over two weeks and is designed for kids between five and 18 years.“We planned for 120 kids but right now we have 105 kids which is quite impressive. We have three categories, five to nine years, 10 to 14 years then 15 to 18 years. We have seasoned professionals to take them through, then intermittently the children will be given quiz and some competitions, so that at the end we have some prizes and certificates being awarded to them, including medals and handicap certificates,” Richard- Obiora said.She noted that those that are issued handicaps at the end of the programme, will qualify for the IBB Junior Open that comes up from August 7-10.The kids are being tended to by seasoned professional golfers, one of whom is Nigeria’s first female professional, Uloma Mbuko.Mbuko explained that the philosophy behind the clinic is to catch the talent young and instill in them the discipline and etiquettes of the game.“Presently we are doing well in the golfing industry, we have been able to raise two international players, including Iyene Essien. first_img1 Jul 2013 England trio seek further success in Biarritz Nick Marsh (Huddersfield, Yorkshire), a quarter finalist in last month’s Amateur Championship, who led the first round of the Brabazon Trophy last week, is one of three players selected to represent England Golf in the Chiberta Grand Prix in Biarritz on 4th – 7th July. He will be joined by Paul Howard (Southport & Ainsdale, Lancashire) and Michael Saunders (Dartford, Kent). Ryan Evans (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire) will then link up with the trio for the Biarritz Cup on 11th – 14th July. Marsh, 18, fired an impressive opening two-under-par 70 in testing conditions at Formby but eventually finished tied 19th. Last year, he reached the quarter finals of the British Boys and won five of his six games in helping England retain the Boys Home Internationals and Yorkshire win the Boys County Championship. He was also the individual winner in the Canadian International Junior Challenge. Howard, 22, has represented Lancashire in the Men’s County Championship and finished runner-up in last year’s Selborne Salver. This year, he finished fifth in the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship and equal ninth in the St Andrews Links Trophy. Saunders, 22, is a former winner of the Lagonda Trophy, finishing fifth this year, while he was equal sixth in the Welsh Open Stroke Play and tied seventh in last week’s Brabazon Trophy. He is also a member of the England ‘A’ squad. Evans, 26, is in a rich vein of form which has seen him into the top six on the Titleist/FootJoy England Golf Order of Merit. He won the Berkshire Trophy recently, finished runner-up in the St Andrews Links Trophy and joint third in the French Open Amateur Championship. Over the weekend he finished tied seventh in the Brabazon Trophy but won the Scrutton Jug for the best aggregate from that and the Berkshire Trophy. Last year, he finished tied seventh in Biarritz. The Chiberta Grand Prix is medal stroke play over 72 holes with a halfway cut. There is also a team event over the first two days, the best two of the three cards to count. Cash recovered after horror armed raid in Malin

first_imgA substantial sum of cash has been recovered after an armed raid at a home in Malin on Saturday night.Gardaí launched follow-up searches in the aftermath of the attack at Beaugh, which has rocked the entire Inishowen community.However, the suspects, who tied up two men during the raid, remain at large. The incident happened at 7.30pm on Saturday night when four masked intruders broke into the home brandishing crowbars.The home was that of John Byrne, local businessman and director of the local GAA club, who was attending a wedding at the time.Mr Bryne’s sons, aged in their 20s, were tied up by the raiders and left shaken by the ordeal.The burglars fled on foot with a large sum of cash, some of which belonged to the GAA club. Gardaí conducted follow-up searches to recover some money and investigations are continuing to track the suspects.Drivers are being asked to share dashcam footage from the area if they were on the roads between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday evening.The suspects are believed to have escaped the area through fields, and Gardaí are calling on farmers or any members of the public who noticed anything untoward to get in touch.The incident also occurred during the busy Mass time in the area, so anyone who was nearby is asked to report anything that may have been suspicious.The public is being urged to contact Buncrana Garda Station on (074) 932 0540 with any information that could help with the investigations.
